Sports and energy drinks, widely consumed by the public, have recently proven to hold detrimental dental consequences. According to a recent study that saw publication in the journal General Dentistry, the high-acidity levels that are present in most brands of sports and energy drinks cause irreversible tooth enamel erosion.
Researcher and author of the study Poonam Jain remarks “Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that these products are better for their general wellbeing than regular soda. (However), most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.”
During the duration of the study, the researchers analyzed the acidity levels of 13 sports drinks and 9 energy drinks. The researchers were able to find out that the acidity levels of sports and energy drinks between brands and even between flavors of the same brand varied widely.
The assessment of dental erosion that results from exposure to these beverages was essentially gathered by immersing human tooth samples in each of the studied beverage for 15 minutes. After which, the human tooth samples, were then immersed in artificial saliva for 2 hours. Researchers noted that irreversible tooth enamel damage already started to show 2 days into the study.
Spokeswoman of the Dentistry Academy Jennifer Bone remarks that people “don’t realize that something as seemingly harmless as a bottleful of sports or energy drinks can do a lot of damage to their teeth.” Dr. Bone actively advises her patients to minimize their sport and energy drinks consumption and that they either rinse their mouths with water or chew on a sugar-free gum to immediately neutralize the high-acidity levels of these drinks.
